Public Works
The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City of Greenwood's essential infrastructure and delivering key municipal services to support a safe and sustainable community. This includes managing water and sewer systems, garbage collection, road maintenance, snow removal, and related operations. Our team works to ensure reliable service while incorporating efficient practices and resident feedback for ongoing improvements.
Services Provided
Water Services
We provide reliable access to clean water through the municipal waterworks system. Residents and property owners must apply for connections, and all services are metered for accurate billing. Quarterly utility bills cover water usage, with payments due on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. Key guidelines include:
- Applications for new or modified water services must be submitted to the City for approval.
- Conservation is encouraged to support sustainable usage.
- Restrictions apply to prevent contamination or wasteful practices.
For details on rates and regulations, refer to the Water Regulation Bylaw No. 912, 2016. To request a connection or service change, complete the Water/Sewer Request Form available at City Hall or by contacting the department.
Sewer Services
The sewer system ensures safe wastewater management for the community. Connections require City inspection and approval before backfilling. Prohibited discharges include hazardous materials, excessive grease, or items that could damage the system. Quarterly billing applies, aligned with water utilities.
For full regulations, see the Sewer Regulation Bylaw No. 911, 2016. Use the Water/Sewer Request Form for connection requests or inquiries.
Garbage Collection
Garbage collection is provided to maintain a clean and wildlife-safe environment. Residents should use secure bins and follow bear-smart practices to minimize attractants:
- Store garbage indoors or in a locked enclosure until collection day morning.
- Avoid placing bins out overnight.
- Compost responsibly by turning piles regularly and avoiding meat or dairy.
Collection occurs regularly; contact the department for the current schedule, bin guidelines, or special pickups. Rates are included in quarterly utility bills. Note: Illegal dumping is prohibited, and violators may face enforcement under municipal bylaws.
Recycling and Waste Disposal
Recycling services are managed by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB). Residents can access regional facilities for recyclables, yard waste, and other items. For local landfill information or to report contamination issues, visit the RDKB website or contact them directly. The City encourages reducing waste through proper sorting to support environmental goals.
Road and Infrastructure Maintenance
Our team handles road repairs, pothole filling, signage, and seasonal snow plowing to keep streets safe and accessible. We also oversee creek dredging, culvert maintenance, and flood prevention measures as needed. Report road hazards or maintenance needs promptly to help prioritize work.
Additional Operations
- Litter control and public garbage receptacles in downtown and park areas.
- Support for community projects, such as installing memorial benches in parks or trails (applications available at City Hall).
- Seasonal tasks, including campground maintenance (water, sewer, and sanitation) and electric vehicle charging station oversight.
