Garbage and Recycling

Greenwood residents receive curbside collection services through the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB). Garbage and organics are collected weekly, while recycling is bi-weekly. For detailed schedules, guidelines, and updates, visit the RDKB website.

  • Garbage is collected weekly in Greenwood. Each bag or container (up to 23 kg/50 lbs) requires a $3 RDKB garbage tag. Use a sturdy, secure can to reduce tags needed and prevent wildlife access.

    • Set-Out Time: Place bins curbside by 8:00 a.m. on collection day (Tuesdays for most of Greenwood; check schedule for specifics). Do not set out the night before.
    • Bring Back: Retrieve bins promptly after pickup to avoid attracting bears.
    • Garbage Tags: Purchase $3 tags at:
      • Greenwood City Hall
      • Greenwood Canco
      • Greenwood Groceries
      • West Boundary Landfill (near Greenwood)
    • Note: Untagged garbage will not be collected. Check Greenwood bylaws for mandatory can requirements.

  • Organics are collected weekly at no charge in Greenwood’s green bin program. Accepted items include food scraps (meat, bones, dairy, fruits, vegetables, oils) and soiled paper (e.g., pizza boxes).

    • Tips: Set out by 8:00 a.m. on collection day, even with small amounts. Line bins with paper bags, rinse after use, and store securely to deter wildlife.
    • Not Accepted: Plastics (even “compostable”), pet waste, diapers, or yard waste.

View the RDKB Green Bin User Guide for accepted items.

  • Hazardous waste (e.g., paints, batteries, electronics, motor oil) is not collected curbside. Residents must use RDKB facilities or events for safe disposal.

    • Options: Visit the Grand Forks Bottle Depot (call 250.442.2523) or other RDKB depots like West Boundary Landfill.

Learn more about hazardous waste disposal on the RDKB website.
