Who We Are

Greenwood, BC
Trans Canada Trail

Greenwood, BC
A Trans Canada Trail Community

The Columbia & Western Railway came into Greenwood on October 21,1899 and continued to Midway, BC by January 1900.

The last train came through in 1988 and the Railway was then abandoned. In March 1999, the CPR donated the Right-Of-Way to be turned over to Trails BC and the Trans Canada Trail Foundation.

Click here more information on the Railway History of the Boundary.

The Greenwood Heritage Society is responsible for the section of the Trans Canada Trail from Midway to Eholt a distance of about 26 km.

Take a ride or hike past the West Kootenay Power Building and image the possibilities of this structure.

In March 2001, the two trestles at Anaconda and beside the West Kootenay Power Building are now decked and hand-railed to make them safe for all users.  Barriers will be placed in front to stop vehicular traffic.

Tunnel Of Flags

The 1913 Road Tunnel was underneath the CPR trestle. It was used until 1964 when a new double tunnel replaced it. This one was buried until 1992 when the double tunnel was demolished and this tunnel was once again uncovered.

In 1998, The Mayor of Greenwood, Arno Hennig started painting the Flags of the World on it to hide the graffiti. He then turned it into a Millennium Project sponsored by the Greenwood Community Association, the Greenwood Heritage Society, The Greenwood Board of Trade and many local citizens and travelers.

It is located right on the Trans Canada Trail and Southern Provincial Highway #3 (Crowsnest Highway) just east of Greenwood, BC  to greet all Travelers of the World!  Stop and see if you can name all 200+ flags...bring a lunch and take a walk or bike along this wonderful Trail.
