In September 1997, some location scouts came into Greenwood looking for a place to make a movie. They thought that our old buildings and 'look' were what they were searching for. In November, the preparations began to transform landlocked Greenwood, BC, at 750m (2454 ft) in elevation, into a fishing village called Amity Harbor, Washington. Preparations, construction and painting took 3 months to get the set right. Many local people were employed as security and labourers before the shooting even began in February 1998. The production company also hired many extras locally as they needed a lot of Japanese extras, so our local citizens called friends and family to come in and play a part in this motion picture. Many scenes were filmed in winter to depict a snowstorm hitting the west coast during the courtroom drama. The crew then returned in April to film a strawberry festival parade scene on the main street needing close to 400 extras. An exciting event that is now part of our History! Based on the David Gutersen novel, Snow Falling On Cedars is a murder mystery, courtroom drama, interracial love story and the tragedy of the Internment of Japanese-American Citizens during World War ll.Click Image above for More Pictures of Snow Falling On Cedars has received one Oscar Nomination for Cinematography. Robert Richardson who has won in 1991 for JFK, nominated for BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY in 1989 and PLATOON in 1986.
